Online Birds and Wildlife Sound Library

Beyond birdsong — the island's other voices

The Library also archives calls from Sri Lanka's other vocal wildlife — mammals, frogs and toads, and insects — recorded in the same forests, wetlands and gardens as the birds.

Insects

Of the very many and enormously diverse insect species of the world, those in the Order Orthoptera, Crickets and Grasshoppers, are considered the “musicians” among them. They produce sound by stridulation, involving friction of wings and legs, not vocally. The better known ones ‘sing’ their high-pitched ‘songs’ from urban gardens to distant jungles.

The other main ‘singing insect’ group that make loud and distinct sounds are the Cicadas, in the Order Homoptera, which live mostly in tropical forests. They produce their sound by rapid vibration of a special membrane on each side of the body. A few other groups of insects, in other insect Orders, also produce ‘mechanical sounds’, by stridulation or other means.
